George Charles Jones, Jr. was born June 4, 1927 to George and Agnes Jones in Minneapolis, Minnesota. George had an endless curiosity about the world and when he wasn’t building or fixing something he was reading or at the library researching. If you mentioned something that piqued his interest you might soon be presented with a stack of photocopied pages from books and articles with interesting points highlighted.
George graduated from Southwest High School in 1945 then served in the Navy from 1945 to 1947. He studied zoology at the University of Minnesota. In 1951 during the Korean War George re-enlisted entering the Navy flight school where he trained on SNJs and flew P2Vs on reconnaissance missions. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of First Lieutenant Junior Grade.
In 1963, George married Claire Lowndes Weisheit in Norwalk, Connecticut and adopted her two children Gianna and Nicholas. They had two more children, George and Mason. In 1976 the family moved to Louisiana where George worked as a tugboat wheelman before settling in Dallas, Texas where he worked as a security guard for Republic Bank. George and Claire passed their love of books on to their kids and growing up in their house the words "I'm going to the library" were always followed by "Wait for me!"
George kept his love of flying as a civilian owning and restoring a 1948 Stinson 108-3 and later a 1962 Piper Colt. When he was too old to fly he took up restoring old bicycles and the airplane parts in his garage were replaced by ten-speed frames and vintage leather seats. When he became too old for that he would talk to his kids about whatever old car projects they were working on.
George is remembered by sister Betty Rasmussen and Roland Rasmussen; sister Nancy Hult; son George S. Jones and Moraima Jones and grandchildren Jordan Jones, Lauren Jones and Jennifer Jones; son Mason Jones and grandsons Ewan Jones and Nicholas Jones; Alan Weaver and granddaughters Larissa Mulhall, Brianna Weaver and Alicia Weaver; and brothers-in-law Robert Seabury and Richard Weisheit and family.
