Born on October 10, 1950 in Dallas, TX to parents Curtis and Forest Harrell, Haven was the first-born child and only son of three children. Raised by their mother, Forest Harrell, Haven and his two sisters grew up learning about the importance of education, community service, and most importantly, giving all glory to our Lord and Savior.
Early in his life, Haven made the decision to go by his nickname, “JD”, which was inspired by the character, Deputy J.D. Smith, from one of his favorite classic Western television shows. Both shared and embraced a distinguishing physical quality, which was their misaligned eye.
After graduating from Dallas’ Lincoln High School (1970) and taking classes at El Centro College, JD secured a career with United Cerebral Palsy (UCP). He instantly became one of the most loved and valuable employees at the non-profit organization for his ability to share his challenging journey with epilepsy to genuinely connect with the differently abled children and adults. JD’s openness enabled him to effectively speak to them about their expectations, while supporting their hopes and dreams. He was overjoyed to witness clients pursue higher education, participate in the Disabled Sports Association, enter into group homes, and live more independent lives.
Outside of work, JD loved his collection of film cameras and exhibited a passion for intentionally photographing the smiles of family members, friends, and people he worked with. From regal horses to local landmarks, he would also beautifully capture scenes of the world around him.
JD is predeceased by his grandparents, parents, and sisters Lawana Porter and Dr. Sherril English. He is survived by his nephew, Brent M. English (Marlena), niece, Britney N. English; great niece, Forest Alberta English; and a host of relatives and friends who will love him forever.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, November 22, 2024 at 5PM at Singing Hills Funeral Home in Dallas, TX, with a reception to follow. Pastor Michael Anthony Bray, Sr. of Gladewater Road Baptist Church will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of Haven “JD” Harrell. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving a tribute gift to United Cerebral Palsy, which is committed to the belief that all people with disabilities should be treated as equal members of an inclusive society. We are forever grateful to our friends and family for your thoughts and prayers amidst these difficult days.
