Not every hero wears a cape.

But if my grandmother had worn one, it would have been vibrant, beautifully soft and colorful, and stitched with hand embroidered flowers in the patterns of the tiny pillows and other keepsakes she used to sew for us. 

And in the center of the cape, a big, beautiful G that would glow with the love she exuded for all of us.

I’ve thought a lot about this moment and what I might say. Not because I was morbid, or I wished for it. I’ve only thought about it because my grandmother was not afraid to talk about this moment with me.

She had a deep respect and acceptance for her own mortality and even more, an unshakeable strength of faith that when she was ready, God would know and would step in when He was ready.

There are no words adequate enough to describe that kind of faith. It’s a faith that guided her life and not only her decisions but also guided the advice she would give us, when we struggled for an answer. That advice was filled with love and support and acceptance— never judgment or condescension. That faith of hers that guided her and the support she gave was greater than words like bravery or resolve. I like the word mythic…but I think that is a descriptive she probably would have laughed at. “Ahi mija, no!”

But see anyone with that kind of faith, like a superpower made up of unconditional love, forgiveness, generosity, and spirit, that she had IS mythic…because it is rare. 

She was rare and though we won’t ever see her like again, we have words from her favorite song that we can always use to conjure the faith she had in us…
