James was born on November 11, 1938, in Valletta, Malta, the eldest son of Frank and Beatrice Doublesin. His family endured the Siege of Malta during World War II in his youngest years, from 1940 to 1942. Following the war, he grew up in Valletta, attending grade school and St. Albert's College there and serving as an altar boy at St. John’s Cathedral.
It was in Malta that he met the love of his life, Anna May Caruana. James and Ann were married at the Archbishop’s Palace in Valletta on April 25, 1965. Several months later, they boarded the ship Queen Anna Maria and set off to create a new life in the United States. They settled in New Jersey to begin raising a family.
James worked in several supervisory positions within the manufacturing industry in New Jersey. While there, he and Ann raised four children. After twelve years of enduring New Jersey winters, they decided to relocate and moved the family to Richardson, Texas. In Richardson, he worked for over twenty-five years at Northern Telecom and later worked for Raytheon. Following his retirement, James and Ann moved to their home in Fairview, Texas.
James was always very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, regularly attending sports and school events. He was a huge soccer fan, always watching the game on television and actively playing well into his late forties. James also had a love for opera, often filling the house with La Traviata or Rigoletto as he worked through his “honey-do” list, as he was quite handy around the house. Throughout his sixty-plus years in the U.S., James never lost his Maltese accent and loved telling everyone he met about the tiny island where he grew up. His grandchildren loved his stories about being an altar boy, playing church, and sneaking out for dinner at Cordina’s with his grandpa. In addition, he was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, most recently attending St. Jude Catholic Parish in Allen, Texas.
In addition to his wife, James is survived by his brother Joseph (Malta); his brother Richard (Thailand); his sister Brigitte (Florida); his brother George (Australia); his sister Marthese (Canada); his son Martin and daughter-in-law Cindy (Houston, Texas); his son James Jr. and daughter-in-law Jennifer (Allen, Texas); his daughter Claudine Vazquez and son-in-law Gabe (Irving, Texas); and his seven grandchildren: Rachel, Rebecca, Jessica, Natalie, Jacob, Christina, and Luca. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son David, and his granddaughter Gabrielle.
