

James A. (Al) Johnston passed away quietly at his residence in Dallas on Chriatmas Day 2011. He was born in Dallas, TX July 1919. After twenty-three years in the Air Force Reserves, he obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel. He served proudly during WWII with the Army Air Corps, stationed on the island of Saipan. He met his wife, Ellen D. Morganstern, while stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX. After the war he began his career in the insurance business while living in Dallas. In 1969 he moved to Austin to take over the Texas Workman's Compensation Assigned Risk Pool, where he also started the Professional Medical Insurance Liability Pool.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ellen, his parents and six siblings; Rosa May Neilon, Sister Eleanor Johnston, Alfreda Sadecky, Bob Johnston, Bill Johnston and his twin sister Frances Hassell. He is survived by his daughter Nancy A. Ferro of Dallas and son John A. Johnston with his wife Bonnie of Kempner, Texas. He is also survived by three grandchildren; Jeanette Courtright with husband Steve, Stephen Ferro with wife Allie and Joshua Johnston with wife Erin, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
His passion in life was his business in the insurance field, achieveing the professional designatin of C.P.C.U., Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. He taught courses for the C.P.C.U. at the local junior college. Believing so much in these studies, he sponsored a local scholarship program. He was a dedicated member of the Austin rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.
Services will be held at the Chapel of Calvary Hill Cemetery,3235 Lombardy Lane, Dallas, TX 75220, on Friday Dec 30th at 1:00 pm. Pall bearers are Tom and Gene Hassell, Joe Chilton, Joshua Johnston, Stephen Ferro and Steve Courtright. In liew of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, 909 W. Shaw St., Ft. Worth, TX. 76110.
