home in Arlington, TX, surrounded by loved ones. She was 86.
Janice was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Clarus and Rella Schwartz. She grew up in Mariemont,
Ohio, where she was a brilliant student and gifted piano player. She graduated from Mariemont
High School as valedictorian in 1952, where she was a member of the debate team, the
National Thespian Society, the math club and the science club, the yearbook editor, junior and
senior class vice president, and a drum majorette. She was also quite prolific with her piano
playing, often receiving either solo or duet piano recitals by her piano teacher.
Janice received a full scholarship to the University of Cincinnati, but she decided to go to Ohio
State University, where she graduated in 1955 Summa Cum Laude and valedictorian with a
Bachelor’s of Science in Education, majoring in mathematics. She won several awards for
having the highest gpa in the college of 3.96-- a remarkable achievement, considering she
accelerated her coursework to graduate in three and ¼ years. Her awards and
accomplishments while at OSU are too numerous to list.
While attending Mariemont High, she started dating Joseph P Morgan, a boy she’d known since
childhood. Joe also attended Ohio State and they married in 1955. When Janice graduated, Joe
was already in the US Air Force in Texas, and Jan joined him there to start her long teaching
career.
Jan and Joe had four children; Joseph Morgan Jr., Michael Morgan, Mark Morgan and Meghan
Morgan (Curtis). Jan’s family was the most important thing in the world to her. Even as she was
challenged by the nomadic life of a military wife and a myriad of medical problems, including
three bouts with cancer, she managed to raise 4 children, almost single handedly, through sheer
determination and love.
Janice and Joe divorced in 1981, and realizing she was still thirsty for knowledge, she attended
the University of Texas at Arlington at night, while teaching school during the day. She
graduated with her Masters degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1985. Janice taught honors
math classes at South Grand Prairie High School and Burleson High School. She retired from
teaching in the early 1990s and began enjoying her hobbies of voracious reading, gardening,
music and fiendishly working NYT crossword puzzles and evil level sudoku puzzles. She also
relished spending time with her four kids, five grandkids and one great grandson, loving all of
them to distraction. She was devoted to her kids and grandkids, and would do just about
anything to support and encourage them. She would then revel in their achievements
throughout the years, as any proud mom and Nana would. But she wasn’t just any mom or
Nana, she was OUR mom and Nana, and there are holes in our hearts where we once held her.
She will be greatly missed.
Janice was predeceased by her parents, her sister Jacqueline Doran, her former spouse Joe
Morgan and the best bunch of dogs known to man. Janice is survived by her three sons, Joseph
Morgan Jr, Michael Morgan and spouse Vickie Morgan, and Mark Morgan, and her daughter
and caregiver Meghan Morgan and spouse John Curtis. She is also survived by her
grandchildren Stephanie Goodpaster, Matthew Morgan, Leigh Morgan, Luke Morgan and
Christopher Curtis and great grandchild Lucas Goodpaster.
