Jill Anita Smith died peacefully on May 5, 2017 after a period of illness. Relatives and friends are invited to attend services to honor and celebrate her life at Temple Shalom, 6930 Alpha Road, Dallas, TX 75240, on Sunday, May 7th at 4 pm. Mrs. Smith was born November 1, 1934 on Staten Island, NY. She graduated magna cum laude from Wagner College on Staten Island and received her masters degree in education from Columbia Teachers College, New York City, NY, in 1956. An educator, Mrs. Smith devoted her life to helping students achieve their full potential, particularly those with learning disabilities. She developed a reading program which has given children and adults a path to becoming successful readers and transformed their lives. She is the widow of Frank Tupper Smith Jr, who preceded her in death in 2014 after 56 years of marriage. She is survived by three daughters, Delia West (Rod), Lisa Hogg (Arthur), and Kathryn Hartle (Jesse) and three grandchildren whom she adored, Kathleen Gentleman, Lauren Gentleman, and Breanna West. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lifelong Learning Fund at Temple Shalom.
