Joann Schroeder, passed peacefully into her eternal home on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, to meet her Lord and Savior. Joann was known for her deep religious faith and raised her children in a Christian home. She was born July 23, 1934 in Dallas Texas to Grace and Fred L. Pennington. She was raised in Oak Cliff and graduated from Adamson High School in 1951. There she met Jody Jones and married at 17. They had three daughters.
Joann led a full life as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother to 8, and great grandmother to 7 children. Joann is preceded in death by her husband, James Michael Schroeder II, her parents and her brother, Jimmy L. Pennington. Joann was survived by her 3 daughters: Brenda Lyons of Richardson, Pamela Tomasello (Gene) of Richardson, and Sherry Bagby (Jeff) of Forney, along with her eight grandchildren: Giacomo (Maggie) Tomasello and their five children of Plano, Texas, Jonathan (Nick) Tomasello of Little Rock, Arkansas, Nick Lyons of Steam Boat Springs, Colorado, Natalie Lyons of Richardson, Jennifer (Steven) Elsbecker and their two daughters of Forney, Clayton Bagby of Addison, Amy and Shelby Bagby of Las Colinas.
Joann also leaves behind a step-son, Mike Schroeder, grand-daughter Cheree Walker (Mike) and their 3 children of Grand Prairie; a step-daughter, Patti Schroder Uglum of Wisconsin, and her 2 sons (Robby Robertson and Aaron Uglum);
Joann was a beloved life-time member of Tyler Street Methodist Church and a member of the 2x2 Sunday school class. She was always volunteering at Tyler Street: teaching youth or adult Sunday school classes. She loved chaperoning the many choir trips, hosting weekly bible studies at our home, helping with the annual bazaar for missions, hosting annual Hawaiian Luau for the 2x2 or organizing the church bowling league on Friday nights. Most will remember her famous performance at the talent show where she performed “These Boots are Made for Walkin.” It brought down the house! Joann started the single adult class, and there she met and married Jim Schroeder in 1967. He married “all of us” and took on a lot of responsibility. She had a blended family, but it was far from the Brady Bunch. Joann became a widow in 1997. We had great fun and wonderful family memories of mom. She made every day an adventure and taught us all to not take life so seriously.
Joann began travelling the world with her daughter Brenda on many cruises and international trips. She loved to entertain and be the life of the party. She enjoyed decorating for the holidays and setting a beautiful table. She was a football enthusiast and never missed a Cowboy game. Joann loved playing cards and would love to challenge her daughter in a game of Scrabble or Rummikub. She lived in DeSoto for many years, and as a widow moved to Heritage Ranch in Fairview. Joann fell and broke her hip and then six months later, fell and broke the other hip. This was the beginning of her surmise. She moved briefly to Highland Springs in Richardson before spending her final months of life at the Monarch in Richardson in the memory care wing. She had excellent care and wonderful caretakers. We are very grateful for Ida Martin, who took great care of mom at Highland Springs, and was a comfort to all of us.
Our lives will never be the same without her, but we are forever grateful and so much better because of her and the love she poured into her family and friends.
