Our beloved mother, JoAnn Wyatt Stone was born on August 3, 1928, in Dallas, Texas to Clyde H. and Ella Mae Petrich Wyatt. On October 21, 1932, her brother, Clyde Robert (Bobby) was born much to JoAnn’s delight. JoAnn spent her entire life living in Dallas. She had many friends in grade school and high school and stayed in touch with most of them her entire life. JoAnn graduated from North Dallas High School at 16 years old in 1945. She attended Texas Christian University for her freshman year and then transferred to Southern Methodist University her sophomore year. At 18 years old, she converted to the Roman Catholic faith, which “mystified her”. Her devotion to her Catholic Faith played a significant role throughout the rest of her life. It was at SMU where she met and married Doug Stone in 1947. She and Doug conceived five children across a span of 18 years: Catherine Ann, Douglas Thomas Jr. (Tom), Therese Marie, Charles Jude and Dolores Maria.
JoAnn was a devoted mother and homemaker who was the constant in her children’s lives since Doug travelled most of his mechanical engineering career. All the children were raised in the Catholic educational system. Both JoAnn and Doug believed strongly that a Catholic education was the best preparation for a meaningful and purposeful life. JoAnn was very active in the Church, and no matter what organization she was a part of, she rose to the highest leadership role. Her love for the Church led to a devotion to the priests of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Diocese. She was a founding member and president of the Dallas Diocesan Vocations Guild, an organization that supported the sisters and priests, along with encouraging youth to consider a life as a nun or priest. JoAnn was a long-standing member of Christ the King Parish, where she served on the Altar Society and was a lector. She was a member of Eruditus Study Club and the Guild of St. Joseph. JoAnn and Doug had close friendships with numerous priests and nuns over the years.
After finally going back to SMU in her 50’s, she graduated in 1981with degrees in English and History. JoAnn taught for several years as a substitute teacher. She was a volunteer archivist for the Diocese of Dallas for many years. During this time, she was periodically featured in the “Reel to Reel” program on Catholic television. She also wrote a monthly article entitled “Looking Back” in the Texas Catholic, the official publication of the Diocese of Dallas. She was recognized in numerous ways for her service to the Dallas Diocese.
Doug travelled extensively both nationally and internationally in his work. JoAnn and he enjoyed travelling the world and there was hardly a place that you could mention that they had not visited. In their later years they travelled all over the U.S.A. in their RV. JoAnn cherished these adventures with Doug.
JoAnn was a devoted mother. She was an exceptionally good cook and loved to serve anyone who stepped into her home. She was very kind and never met a stranger. JoAnn embraced differences and found something good in everyone she met. She had an extraordinary ability to make people feel at ease and that they had her undivided attention. In every elder community in which she lived, she made sure that a generous collection was taken up from the residents to thank the staff at the end of every year during the holidays. She was a beloved resident and neighbor no matter where she lived.
Her beautiful smile and blue eyes, kindness, devotion to family, and generous heart paints the cherished image that we carry within of her. She will be deeply missed by all of us who knew and loved her. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parent Clyde and Ella Mae, her brother, Bobby, and her husband Douglas T. Stone, Sr. She is survived by her children: Catherine Ann Greener, and her spouse, Ronnie; Tom Stone and his wife, Cathy; Therese Marie Ryan, Charles Jude Stone, and Dee Cassell along with sixteen grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
