It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for an extraordinary life that we announce the passing of Joe Edmond Porter, who passed away as the sun rose on May 31, 2025. Born on March 3, 1945, in Dallas, Texas, to Joseph Alexander Porter and Nora Wicker Porter, Joe was the beloved second of three children, known for his ability to bring warmth and laughter to those around him.
A proud graduate of Bryan Adams High School, Joe exhibited an unwavering passion for knowledge, which he further pursued at the University of Texas at Arlington. There, he studied History and Political Science, two fields that fueled his lifelong curiosity about the world. Joe's exceptional attention to detail found expression in his prowess as a master marksman, earning numerous accolades in esteemed competitions through UTA’s marksmanship program.
In 1969, Joe married the love of his life, Patricia Robbins Porter, in a heartfelt ceremony held in Denton, Texas. Their union was a testament to their deep connection, and together they nurtured two wonderful daughters, Bethany Lynette and Amanda Jane, who were the shining stars of his existence. His unwavering devotion as a husband and father exemplified love and commitment, built on a solid foundation of faith in Christ.
As an active and dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church and later Zion Lutheran Church, Joe left an indelible mark on his community. His contributions as an Elder of Worship showcased his leadership and deep commitment to his faith, while his rich baritone voice enriched the church choir. Joe’s spirit of service extended to the senior ministry and fellowship activities, where he inspired countless individuals with his kindness, compassion, and insightful guidance.
With a remarkable career spanning over 50 years in sales, Joe began his professional journey at Purex, quickly establishing himself as one of the company’s top salesmen. However, his desire to prioritize family soon led him to launch his own roofing company, where he passionately dedicated over three decades to serving clients with integrity and exceptional craftsmanship.
A true Texan at heart, Joe proudly embraced his Irish heritage, infusing every interaction with his vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm. Known affectionately as the "Mayor of Greenville Avenue," he relished daily "walkabouts" on Greenville and Henderson Avenues, as well as in the eclectic Deep Ellum neighborhood, where engaging in thoughtful conversations and fostering relationships were a way of life. His remarkable ability to listen intently and offer wise counsel enriched the lives of countless individuals, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Joe’s zest for life was contagious, teaching those around him to cherish each moment and embrace opportunities for joy. He always saw the best in people and encouraged everyone not only to see but to reach their full potential. His creativity and thoughtfulness permeated his character, instilling in his daughters the enduring values of empathy, unconditional love, and respect for all—gifts that will continue to resonate throughout their lives.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his cherished wife, Patricia, and his beloved daughters, Bethany Porter and Amanda Porter, along with her husband, Christopher Sharp. He also leaves behind his dear brother, James Porter, and loving sister, Martha Houts, as well as his granddog, Charlie Porter, who brought him so much joy.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Joe's memory by considering a donation to the American Heart Association or the ASPCA.
His legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness will forever shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Joe, knowing that you have left an extraordinary mark on this world and will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing you.
“In the same way, when a good or great person’s life comes to its final sunset, the skies of this world are illuminated until long after he is out of view. Such a person does not die from this world, for when he departs, he leaves much of himself behind – and being dead, he still speaks.” – Henry Ward Beecher
