

Joel Thomas Krog, 79, passed away Saturday, September 20th in Houston after a long illness. Born March 9, 1935 in Ashland, KY, to Helen Frances Armstrong and Robert Hyman Krog, Joel was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ashland. He attended Ashland public schools where he excelled in basketball. Joel majored in mathematics at SMU while on a full basketball scholarship, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Blue Honorary Society. Joel captained the SMU Mustang Basketball Team to the Final Four in 1956, and that same year graduated with a degree in mathematics and received a commission as 2nd Lt in USAF Reserves.
In 1957, Joel married the love of his life, Marilyn Kendrick, whom he met at SMU.
After serving three years in USAF, mostly at the NSA, Joel and Marilyn moved to Houston where they both earned master’s degrees at Rice University and Joel began his career in steel fabrication.
Joel worked as a Civil Engineer at Austin Steel Co, Houston and North Texas Steel, Fort Worth. Projects he worked on as chief structural engineer were American Airlines Arena and Meyerson in Dallas, and Midland Airport.
Joel is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn. Survivors are sister, Ann Meyers and husband John, daughter Carolyn Gilbert (Mark), son Mark Krog (Stephanie), daughter, Linda Springs, and 7 grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Family will be planning a memorial service in Houston at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cal Farley’s Ranch in Amarillo.
