John Ecker Agnew passed away on October 21, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, on June 30, 1945, to Helen Marie and John David Agnew. He grew up in Grapevine, Texas, with his parents and sister.
After graduating from Grapevine High School in 1963, John attended The University of Oklahoma, where he was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and formed lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers. John attended law school at The University of Texas, where he earned his J.D. in 1970. He had a distinguished career as a civil litigation attorney and was a proud member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, culminating with his service as a director in the organization for 12 years. In addition, he taught a Trial Advocacy course at Southern Methodist University. John also proudly served on the State Bar Grievance Committee for District 6 and was a Special Counsel for the State Bar regarding grievance matters.
A passionate supporter of OU football, John was a fixture at the annual OU-Texas game and often traveled to Sooner road games, including two of the Sooners’ National Championship wins. When not following his beloved (and sometimes maddening) Sooners, he also enjoyed fly fishing, golf, reading and completing the daily New York Times crossword. He cherished the time spent with his beloved family and friends, who will remember him for his wit, warmth and generosity.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and John. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Joan Agnew Telford; daughters, Amy Lynn Agnew and Laura Agnew Sanders; son-in-law Brad Sanders; and granddaughters Olivia, Claire and Natalie. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at Sparkman-Hillcrest on November 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
