

Today we celebrate the life of Sister Johnnie Mae Johnson, a remarkable woman of faith, wisdom, joy, and love, who entered the eternal presence of her Lord on September 19th, 2025. Her life was one of devotion, learning, laughter, and service—a life that touched everyone blessed to know her.
Sis. Johnnie Johnson, lovingly known as Mae, was born in Hobbs, New Mexico, to the late Agnes Wonzer Oats and Johnny Johnson. She was the cherished granddaughter of Ruthie Evans and Lewis Wonzer, whose love and guidance shaped her early years. Mae was a proud graduate of David W. Carter High School of Dallas, and her passion for learning never waned. Later in life, she pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Counseling, demonstrating her lifelong dedication to growth, understanding, and intellectual curiosity.
Johnnie shared her life with her beloved partner, the late Vernell Taylor, and she was preceded in death by her siblings Barbara Ann Porter, LaDale Hervey, Brenda Joyce Wonzer, and Reese Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory, her siblings Marilyn Marie Hervey, Michael Johnson (Sandra), Helen Moore, and Raymond Johnson (Clemmie), along with a community of family, friends, and devoted church members whose lives she touched deeply.
On April 4, 1998, Sis. Johnnie Johnson became a faithful and dedicated member of Egypt Chapel Baptist Church, Sis. Johnnie served as the Sunday School Superintendent with commitment and an unwavering servant’s heart. She taught bible study with passion that inspired others to get to know Christ.
After 30 years of service, Sis. Johnnie retired from the United States Postal Service, where her dedication, diligence, and faithfulness earned her numerous accolades. She approached her work with integrity and care, reflecting the same principles she lived by every day.
Sis. Johnnie had a remarkable gift for bringing joy and laughter into the lives of others. She was an intelligent and articulate woman and had an easy-going spirit that shined bright during family game nights—especially when playing dominoes, where her wit and clever strategies kept opponents entertained and laughing. Her humor was matched only by her devotion to learning, faith, and uplifting those around her.
In her final moments, Sis. Johnnie gave the world a glimpse of her radiant faith and joy. She lifted her hand in praise and sang loudly to shake the walls, “I’ve had the time of my life, and I owe it all to You,” leaving a memory of unshakable devotion and celebration of a life well-lived.
Though we grieve the loss of Sister Johnnie Mae Johnson, we rejoice in a life fully lived in service to Christ—a life that was smart, witty, joyful, and deeply faithful. Her laughter, insight, love, and the joy she brought to ordinary moments will remain in our hearts forever.
Sis. Johnnie Johnson has left this earth, but her legacy of love, learning, toughness, laughter, and unwavering faith will continue to shine brightly in all of us who were blessed to know her.
