On August 22, 1927, Joseph Patrick Gargan came into this world. He was born to Thomas and Elizabeth (McAuliffe) Gargan, both of whom were Irish immigrants. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and was the youngest of five children raised with a strong Catholic faith. At the young age of 17, he entered the Marines and served 2 years. At the end of the war, he continued his education and graduated from Marquette University in 1951.
In 1954 he met, and fell in love with, Jeanne Chaffee Peter and her two children - Charles John, a toddler, and Cathy, an infant. He proposed to his “Grace Kelly” and they were married in July 1955. Maureen was born two years later.
With his good looks and outgoing personality, he was destined to become a salesman. He worked in sales his entire career, rising to Executive VP of Sales with Elizabeth Arden, happy to return to his roots in NYC.
Joe’s joys in life were friends and family. His children and grandchildren were his greatest source of pride. He was happiest when he and Jeanne were entertaining a group of friends or hosting a family gathering in their home. He loved to travel and was fortunate enough to tour the world. Always well groomed, he will be remembered for his sense of style. He was the consummate gentleman.
Joseph, Joe, Father, Dad, Pop, was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Jeanne. He is survived by his three children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
