Larry Wayne Samford was born on December 9, 1949 in Dallas, Texas to Lester Wayne Samford and Lorene Menefee. He grew up in Oak Cliff and graduated from W.H. Adamson High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1972 with fighter squadron 121. He passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014 while returning from a SCR Regional Meeting of his beloved VIET NAM VETS/LEGACY VETS Motorcycle Club and had an accident on the highway in Oklahoma. He was doing one of the things he loved most...riding his motorcycle with his brothers. Larry is survived by his wife of 13 years, Tracy, mother and step-father Lorene and Carroll Menefee, son and daughter-in-law Zack and Kelley Samford, son Derek Samford, sister and brother-in-law Leslie and Jerry Dunsmore, sister Kimberly Samford, step-daughter and son-in-law Kasey and Jeff Johnson, step-son Taylor Burns, 5 beautiful grandchildren – Lauren Armor, Hailee Samford, Kylie Johnson, Skyler Samford & Harper Johnson, Niece Haley Dunsmore Shimek and Nephew Kacy Dunsmore. He is preceded in death by his father Lester Samford and sister Linda Samford and many other close friends and family who he loved dearly.
Larry was a great son, brother, husband, father, step-father, grandfather, musician and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He loved his family, friends, singing and playing guitar, writing music, going to the shooting range and facebooking about politics. He was a kind man who loved sweets, the Dallas Cowboys, cozy pajamas and a good book. He was an accomplished musician who toured Europe with the Rocky Athas group and released an album with Armadillo Records. He was also a vital member of the bands “Big D Stuff,” “Gangster,” “Cliffhangers,” “Lightning,” and “Kempy & The Guardians.” He was known for his smoky soulful voice, meaningful lyrics and calm, cool stage presence.
Riding his motorcycle and joining the VNV/LV MC was one of his happiest times. He was recently elected to “Road Captain” within the club and was very proud of his new title. He was an amazing "Pop Pop" and "Grandpa Larry" to his grandkids and would brag about them to anyone who would listen. He cherished his time spent with his loving wife Tracy and was never far from her side.
