On a cool winter’s evening, December 4th, 1955, in Dallas Texas, Mamie Louise McMillian entered into this world through the precious union of the late Curtis Wilder (a dedicated father) and Mary Andrews Wilder (a treasured mother). She was the youngest of eight children; three sisters; Jessie Watts, Ruby Lewis, and Ruth Kelly, and one brother; Herbert Wilder, have preceded her in the journey to be with the Lord.
Mamie spent her childhood years in Dallas, Texas where she attended Oliver W. Holmes Middle School and Franklin D. Roosevelt High School and graduated a year early in 1973. After high school, Mamie attended El Centro Community College, where she studied Nursing. While at El Centro, she met the love of her life, the late Carl Edward McMillian. According to Mamie, “Carl was extremely persistent” and that persistence paid off and on July 13, 1974, Carl and Mamie McMillian were married. They spent over twenty beautiful years together and through their union and God’s grace, they were blessed with a son, their “Miracle Baby” Jeremy Rashaud McMillian, who she loved more than life itself. Mamie also inherited a host of loving and supportive family members, since Carl’s family was just as large as her family and steadily growing. In 2000, Mamie continued her education and graduated from Amberton University, in Garland, Texas with a Bachelor's Degree in General Studies/Arts.
Mamie started her professional career at UT Southwestern Hospital and then later joined Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she played an integral role in the Parkland Foundation. Due to her outstanding contributions during her tenure, a room inside the hospital is named in her honor. Mamie had a positive impact on everyone she met at Parkland, and during her time there she established lasting relationships with everyone in the building. Mamie’s tenure at Parkland was 40+ years until retirement.
In her personal life, she prioritized her faith in God as a dedicated member of Greater Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. She served as the Head of the Baptist Training Union (BTU) and as the Financial Secretary. Mamie also devoted her time coordinating various youth programs and activities. She was a faithful member for over 30 years and loved her church and church family dearly. She will forever be remembered as a God-fearing woman who would go above and beyond for her family, friends, loved ones, and even strangers. Mamie ensured her family was her top priority, and regardless of the occasion, Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, Sunday Dinners, Facebook Groups, or Zoom calls; Mamie made it a point to plan family gatherings. She enjoyed creating loving memories with everyone in her life.
