Margaret Moore Solomon was born in Dallas May 15, 1910. She died peacefully at her home on Saturday morning. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Moore, who were early-day active citizens of Dallas, her father having founded Austin Bridge Company, the antecedent of Dallas-based Austin Industries. Margaret lived her entire life in Dallas, where she married Marion B. Solomon, who predeceased her; and together they raised their family to whom she was extremely devoted and who will miss her greatly.
She graduated from Southern Methodist University and, prior to that, from the Hockaday School and served on Hockaday’s Alumni Board. She loved language and music and played the piano beautifully and was fluent in French throughout her life. At age 15, while at Hockaday, she was one of three students state-wide who won the state Latin tournament.
She was a life-long member of the Dallas Woman’s Club and served on its Board. She was also a long-time member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, Dallas Country Club, Dallas Garden Club, Junior League of Dallas, Junior League Garden Club and Craig Class.
In addition to piano and French, her hobbies included gardening (outdoors and in her home), traveling at home and abroad, reading, and most especially enjoying what she called her “wonderful family.” She was the most devoted of mothers and, for example, counted among her fondest memories her five years as a Cub Scout den mother. In her later years she derived great pleasure from her grandchildren and more recently also her great grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons Charles, and his wife Jackie, and William, and his wife Gay; grandchildren Charles Solomon, Jr. and wife Janina, John Solomon and wife Ame, Katherine Solomon Lammers and husband Michael, Elizabeth Solomon Stewart and husband Phipps, William Solomon, Jr. and wife Dana, and Meredith Solomon Boyd and husband Wes; and by her great grandchildren Harrison Solomon, Sarah Solomon, William Solomon III, Florence Solomon, Austin Solomon, Bryant Solomon, Will Boyd, Margaret Boyd and George Boyd.
There will be a memorial service at Highland Park United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, preceded by a private, family burial at Grove Hill Cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Hockaday School or Highland Park United Methodist Church.
