Marilyn Ann Shriver Hansen, aged 89, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2023, in Dallas, TX, at the home of her daughter. She was born on July 17, 1934, in Coats, Kansas to her wheat farming parents, Jacob and Frances Shriver. Marilyn spent an idyllic childhood in the small town of Coats, with some winters in Corpus Christi, TX. She graduated first in her class from Coats High School in 1952 and moved to Dallas to attend SMU. There she was active in campus life and the Delta Gamma Sorority. Marilyn graduated from SMU in 1956 with a degree in English and began working as a teacher in the DISD. She met Joe Dave Scott while at SMU and they married in 1960. The couple welcomed a son, Jackson David in 1962. After Joe Dave passed away from an illness in 1965, Marilyn went to work for KDFW-TV where she worked in the news department writing copy. There she met Kenneth W. Hansen, the station’s Art Director, whom she married in 1967. Ken and Marilyn had three more children: Erik, Thomas, and Frances. She worked alongside both her husbands in the news business in Dallas, and their homes were welcoming and filled with spirited discussions of local happenings and news of the world. While raising her family, Marilyn became active in the Lakewood community and served as president of the PTAs of Lakewood Elementary and Woodrow Wilson High School, where she was a strong and compassionate advocate for all students. Marilyn also served on the board of the East Dallas YMCA as well as other local organizations. She cultivated amazing and enduring friendships with her Lakewood women’s soccer team, in bridge groups, and book clubs. Though she lived in Dallas, she maintained a deep connection to her home in Kansas, eventually managing their family farmland with her beloved older sisters, Shirley Miller and Patricia Meredith. Marilyn will always be remembered for her lifelong interest in reading and the arts, her joy of life told through her lively stories, service to her communities, and devotion to her family. Her friends and family knew her for her hearty laugh, fierce conviction, and wistful memories of Kansas sunflowers and the rolling waves of the Texas coast. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Joe Dave Scott, son, Jackson David Scott Hansen, husband Kenneth W. Hansen, and sister, Shirley Miller. She is survived by children Erik (Jean), Tommy, and Francie (Mary); grandchildren Jackson David, Shriver Harris, Cate Jean, and Sigrid Shriver; sister Pat Meredith (Lawrence); sister-in-law Barbara Miller; and many nieces and nephews from the Hansen and Shriver families. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at Greenland Hills UMC (5835 Penrose Ave., Dallas) on October 7, 2023, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in her name to the Wesley Rankin Community Center of Dallas (online or 3100 Crossman Ave, Dallas, TX 75212) or the League of Women’s Voters (www.lwv.org).
