Marilyn was born on April 10, 1947 to Millicent Gwendoline and Leonard Richard Frederick Wing in Sutton, England, where she lived until the family moved to Norwich in the early 1950s. In Norwich she was a student at the Hewett School, where her eldest son Simon would also attend years later.
Professionally she worked in administrative and customer relations roles for several universities and businesses, including the University of Manitoba, the University of East Anglia, and the pharmaceutical company Beecham. She lived for a year in Winnipeg, Canada in 1970-71, and Bellport, New York with her husband and children in 1980-81. She travelled the world to destinations including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and loved her annual vacation to France for wine and cheese and to practice her second language. Upon retirement, she made her home in a cottage in the village of Walcott in the east of England, where she enjoyed tending her garden, working in the local charity shop, and continuing to pursue her lifetime passion of reading and book collecting.
In 2014 she, along with a few items of furniture, a couple of suitcases of clothes, and some four dozen boxes of books, emigrated to the United States to be near her sons and grandchildren, settling in Lewisville, Texas. She found community volunteering at the local library and working part time at Dallas Farmer’s Market.
Her final years were spent in a brave battle with dementia, and the family is thankful to all the caretakers at Iris Memory Care in Dallas. She is survived by her sons Simon, Daniel, and Michael West, grandchildren Miranda and Nicholas West, and daughters-in-law Estefana and Amanda West.
Services will be held at 10am January 10, 2026, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.
