Mary was an only child born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on October 9, 1927 to George and Ruth Dwyer. Although frequent contact was maintained with both parents, she was raised by her paternal grandparents, Thomas and Bessie Dwyer. Mary had a happy childhood with loving grandparents. Her grandfather died when she was age 13. Four months later, she and her grandmother moved to San Bernardino, California to be near her great aunt and uncle. She attended San Bernardino High School.
Mary was married to Chester Shaw in June 1943, and they were married for fifty-nine years. They had one child, Mary Jane.
Mary was employed in school district food services for 27 years and last served as Director of Food Services for Fullerton High School District in CA. Mary was an active member of Orangethorpe Christian Church in Fullerton, CA and attended North Highlands Bible Church after moving to Dallas in 2013 to be near her daughter, son-in-law and grandson. She read daily devotions and her Bible.
Mary had a zest for life and an adventurous spirit. She loved to travel. She and her husband, Chester, traveled often domestically and internationally. They owned a trailer and camped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains a couple of weeks every summer with friends and their grandson.
Mary had many dear friends. She was an excellent bridge player and continued playing bridge with friends to age 97. She enjoyed entertaining her family and friends throughout the year. She was a great cook and well known for her homemade pies. Mary made holidays special and continued decorating for the holidays until her passing.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Chester. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Wuertz and her son-in-law, Phillip Wuertz, by her grandson, Troy Wuertz and his wife, Margaret, and by her great-grandchildren, Weston and Vivienne.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Charlotte, Amy, Meski, and Rachel who provided loving caregiving to Mary the last several years. We are also grateful to those who prayed for her health and those who encouraged her with telephone calls and visits.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to North Highlands Bible Church in Dallas.
Services will be held at Sparkman/Hillcrest Chapel on Northwest Highway on Saturday, December 6, at 2:00. Interment will follow at Sparkman/Hillcrest Memorial Park.
