

Melba Joyce Williams was born to Annie Bell Hobbs and James C. Underwood in a small farm community in Point, Texas. She was the fifth child of eight children, four sisters and three brothers. Melba was 7 years old when the family moved to Dallas, Texas in 1943. She attended public schools, H.S. Thompson Elementary, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary and Lincoln High School, graduating in 1955. In 1956, Melba married Ivan Johnson. To this union came one daughter Gwendolyn Johnson. Later Melba would unite with Harry Williams. Melba had a passion for helping those in need. It was only fitting that she pursue a career in nursing. In 1974, she received an associate degree in Applied Arts and Science from El Centro College. Then in 1976 she went on to receive her certification as a registered nurse. Melba served as a nurse for more than 30 years in several different hospitals throughout Dallas before retiring in 1999 from Veterans Hospital. She received many awards and recognitions for her stellar service. In 1990, Melba was inducted into the Who’s Who in American Nursing given by The Society of Nursing Professionals for significant contributions to the nursing profession. Melba was a Christian and a faithful member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. There at Zion Hill she served as a member of the Nurses Guild and usher board. Melba’s passion for helping others continued to manifest itself in other areas of her life. Melba served in her community as an activist for many years with ACORN (a community organization) Ewing to Corinth Community group. One of her biggest accomplishments was the revitalization of the Monroe Building there at Denley Dr. and Illinois. She recently received honor and recognition from the Mayor’s office, DART, and the city council. Melba will be remembered for her tireless work in the community. Melba was preceded in death by her parents; James and Annie Underwood; brothers Dewayne, Charlie and James Underwood; sisters Bobbie Wollos and Hellen Sorrells. She leaves to cherish; two sisters Doris Billops and Shirley Love (Joe), one daughter Gwendolyn Johnson, one grandson Carl Johnson (Kyesha), two great-granddaughters Kiya and Kacy Johnson and a host of relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
