It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Pedro D. Matta who went home to be with the Lord on June 9, 2025 at the young age of 61. Pedro, also lovingly known as Pete, Peter, and Peter Gun, was born in Pecos, Texas to Victoria and Everisto Matta on July 22, 1963.
Pete was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1982 to 1985 and attained the rank of Private First Class. He then served in the Reserves until 1988. He was awarded a rifle marksman badge, a sea service deployment ribbon, and a letter of commendation. He completed his high school education during his time in the service. He later pursued and obtained his Medical Assistant degree and took great pride in his work for Dr. Dolores Corpuz and Dr. Rufino Talatala, serving patients for 25 years.
Pete’s love for the Dallas Cowboys ran deep. He continued rooting for them no matter how many times they broke his heart. He was a dedicated and loyal fan his entire life. He also enjoyed walking anywhere and everywhere, taking care of his parents’ lawn with the eye of a perfectionist, barbecuing on the grill, fishing, going to the State Fair with his brother Gilbert, and most of all celebrating the Christmas season which he usually kicked off in mid-November.
Pete’s smile and warmth lit up an entire room. He made people feel welcome and would give a friend or even a stranger the shirt off his back. He loved his family dearly and he let them know that any chance he could whether by texting funny gifs, going to mass with them, or making them menudo and tamales. Above all, he deeply loved his mom and dad. He was a wonderful son and did everything he could to be there and take care of them.
