He was born on August 8, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA to Bertilla and Leo Schober, and older brother, the late Leo B. Schober.
Richard graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) with a degree in Civil Engineering. He began working for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh and went on to a career as a plant manager of manufacturing plants related to the steel industry in Pittsburgh and Birmingham, AL.
A lifelong athlete, Richard played basketball in high school and college, and was an avid tennis and racquetball player into his late seventies.
He met his future wife, Virginia Vivirito at Carnegie Tech. They married on May 9, 1953 and had 64 happy years together.
Richard and Virginia moved to Dallas, TX upon his retirement to be closer to family.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, and their three sons, Richard Leo Schober Jr. (Alicia), Thomas Vincent Schober (Miriam), and Andrew Frank Schober (Ann); seven grandchildren – Stephanie Schober Smith (Harry), Katherine M. Schober, Thomas V. Schober Jr. (Lisa), Andrew F. Schober Jr., Avery L. Schober, Richard L. Schober III, Nathan A. Schober, and four great grandsons.
Always the optimist, Richard saw the glass as half full, and he often likened himself to Lou Gehrig as being the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.”
Funeral mass will be held at Calvary Hill North Chapel, 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 25, followed by burial at Calvary Hill Cemetery.
