With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Robert Alan Skeans, who died peacefully on July 2, 2025, just shy of his 66th birthday. Born on July 12, 1959, in Fort Worth, Texas, Robert was charismatic and approachable, a natural leader who inspired confidence, welcomed conversation, and carried himself with both warmth and purpose. He was friendly, hard-working, and deeply committed to his family, his country, and his community.
The son of a U.S. Air Force officer, Robert spent his childhood living on American military bases around the world, shaped by a strong sense of discipline, respect and service. Following in his father’s military footsteps, Robert was a proud graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in 1982. While at the Academy, he met Nancy Stinson, whom he later married. They settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and welcomed their son, Andrew, in 1990.
After serving six years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Robert continued his education earning his MBA from Wright State University in 1989. He transitioned to civilian life as a manufacturing consultant across a range of industries and at the same time, joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves, continuing his commitment to national service.
In 2000, Robert relocated to Dallas, Texas, where he advanced his civilian career and assumed command of the 73rd Aerial Port Squadron at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth. He ascended to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel while serving as Squadron Commander, leading the unit to many top awards across the Air Force. He retired from military service in 2006, after a distinguished and impactful career.
In 2001, Robert married Tracy Struble, and together they welcomed two children, Lucas and Emma. Soon after, Andrew moved to Dallas to live with them permanently, uniting all three of Robert’s children in a warm and lively household. He retired from his civilian work in 2011, after which he devoted himself fully to raising his family and giving back to his community. Robert took great pride in supporting Lucas’s journey through the Boy Scouts and volunteering for Snowball Express, an organization close to his heart that provides hope and support to Gold Star Military families. His sociability, natural leadership, and work ethic were hallmarks of every endeavor he pursued.
In June 2025, Robert was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor in the frontal lobe of his brain. While the diagnosis came just two weeks before his passing, it is believed the tumor may have been present for many years, gradually altering parts of his personality and behavior. Despite the challenges of recent years, Robert’s final days were marked by reconciliation, peace, and love. Surrounded by Tracy and his three children — Andrew, Lucas, and Emma — he spent his final two weeks in their care, in their presence, and in renewed connection.
Robert is lovingly survived by his three children: Andrew Lewis Skeans, 34, Lucas Robert Skeans, 23, and Emma Jane Skeans, 21. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie Dufour (April 2003) and Ted Lewis Skeans (June 2025), and brother, Mark Andrew Skeans (February 2023).
Those who knew Robert will remember a man of discipline and charm, of principle and humor, of positive energy, generous service, and a love for living life to the fullest. Whether in uniform or at home, he led with conviction, connection, and a spirit that drew people in.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, July 26, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation, an organization that honors our country’s defenders and their families.
