November 12, 1930 – January 10, 2022
Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Roger Lee Neal, 91, passed away Monday, January 10, 2022, in Carrollton, TX, after a long and fulfilling life. He was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on November 12, 1930, to Orville and Blanche Neal. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and was initially stationed at Carswell Airforce Base in Ft. Worth, where he fell in love with Texas. He served in the Air Force, “flying a typewriter” for the 11th Bombardment Wing in Korea, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in January 1955.
After the service, he returned to Indiana University in Bloomington and earned a degree in accounting. Bloomington is also where he met his “beautiful wife” Shirley. They wed in 1956 and moved to Houston, Texas, where they would make their home for the next 60-plus years. Roger spent his entire career in accounting and finance with various oil and gas companies in Houston and a very memorable three years in London, England.
Roger and Shirley raised three daughters and sent each of them off to Texas A&M. Although he was born a Hoosier, Roger became an adopted Aggie, attending many Aggie football games and supporting his wife in all her Aggie Mom endeavors. Over the years, he became known as “Papaw” to six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Roger was often described as “the sweetest man” who treated people with kindness and respect. He had a curious mind and loved to learn. He took great pride in his family and had immeasurable patience for a man with a wife and three daughters. A “master packer”, he had great skill at packing a car with four women and all their luggage on cross-country road trips.
In addition to his parents, Roger is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; brothers, LaVere Neal and Lowell Neal; and sister, Marie Owens. He is survived by daughter Linda and husband, Bill Goad; daughter Beth Peck; daughter Juli and husband, Forrest Baldwin; grandchildren, Billy, Bryan, Ashley, Ryan, Harrison and Connor; and great-grandson, Collier. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, January 30, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
