Rudy T. Tovar passed away on Sunday, June 25, at his home in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 92. He was born in Houston, Texas, on, February 22, 1925, to Rafael and Socorro Tovar. The family moved to Dallas where he attended St. Ann's Catholic School and Crozier Technical High. He served in the US Army during WW II from 1945 to 1946. While on a ship, he served as a medic during the war. Many times he told us stories about the wounded who were transported to the ship and whom he would try to help.
Rudy married Esther Tovar before leaving for the war. Upon discharge, Rudy returned to Dallas and began his work as a furniture refinisher and ultimately was owner of his own company, Tovar Furniture Studio. Along the way, he and Esther raised 5 children, making sure everyone of them received a very good education and completed their college degree. Their children are Estelle Lara, Dr. Rudy Tovar, Roland Tovar, Esther Fraler and Cindy Martinez.
He loved Mexican food, parties, having his own business and raising his family. He especially loved his wife, Esther, his 5 children and all his siblings. Even after his own father died at a very young age, he continued to encourage all his siblings to finish their education and to be good citizens. Rudy also loved helping others. He served the disabled through charity work in the International Order of the Alhambra for many years. He was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus, Dallas Council #799, for over 50 years, was a 4th degree Knight and member of the color corps. As head usher for many years at Christ the King Catholic Church, he worked diligently at finding help for each and every Mass, often substituting himself when no one was available.
Rudy Tovar is survived by his wife of 72 years, Esther, his 5 children, his 8 siblings, Ralph Tovar, Steve Tovar, Rosie Muzaurieta, Carmen Guerra, Chelo Rodriguez, Sr., Mickey Espinoza, Margie Luna and Becky Espinoza, 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 more on the way.
