Samuel Davenport was born on August 20, 1953, in Dallas, Texas, to the proud parents John D. Davenport, Sr. and Johnnie Mae Davenport, both of whom preceded him in death. A lifelong Texan and devoted American, Sam graduated from James Madison High School in 1971 before answering the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served for 27 years, a commitment that reflected his deep sense of duty, discipline, and patriotism.
Raised in the Baptist faith, Sam was a devout man of God who believed wholeheartedly in God’s love and forgiveness. He accepted Christ at a young age and lived his life guided by scripture, often standing on Romans 10:9–10: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Sam was a faithful member of New Start Deliverance Holiness Church in Dallas, Texas, under the leadership of the late Pastor Marvin Brock and Pastor Rachel Brock. He loved God, loved serving God’s people, and believed deeply in giving from his heart. He also had a special love for his dogs, Cotton and Snowball, who brought him great joy.
Professionally, Sam found purpose and pride in his work as an aviation mechanic, inspector, mentor, and consultant for more than 40 years. His career allowed him to travel the world, where he built meaningful relationships and lifelong friendships in Portugal, South Africa, London, and throughout the United States. He was respected for his knowledge, generosity, and willingness to teach and uplift others in his field.
On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Samuel Davenport peacefully transitioned from his earthly body to his eternal home at the Dallas Veterans Hospital, surrounded by love.
He leaves to cherish his memory three children: two daughters, Dr. Ketra L. Davenport-King (Pastor Willie) of Dallas, Texas, and Samantha Davenport-Collins (Christopher) of Houston, Texas; and one son, Samuel D. Davenport (Ruth) of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by four granddaughters, Kennedi J. Cato (Ketra); three grandsons, Keenan E. Davenport (Ketra), and three great-grandchildren: Za’Drianna Cato, Kingston Cato, and Kaleb Davenport. Sam is further survived by one brother, John Lee Davenport (Jackie); two sisters, Johnnie R. Smith (Willie) and Ellen Hart; and a large host of beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Davenport, Sr. and Johnnie Mae Davenport; his beloved Ardella “Big Mama” Judy; one son, Samuel Davenport (Carolyn); three brothers, Charles Davenport, Howard Davenport, and Willie Williams; and five sisters, Mabel Lee Davenport, Ruthie Mae Justice, Gloria Brown, Ardella Hightower, and Debra Carr.
Samuel Davenport lived a life of service, faith, and love. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched, taught, and inspired.
