Scott was born and raised in Dallas and is survived by his wife Suzie Cain Birnbaum; his son Jeff Birnbaum; his step-children Maddie Blumenthal, Jordan (Sasha) Blumenthal, and Zoe Blumenthal; his sisters Liz (Ira) Matsil and Sondra (Alan) Perkins. He is also survived by his grandchildren Henry and Hazel Blumenthal; Suzie’s extended family; Eileen Birnbaum; his beloved Eva who helped raise him; and his many nieces, nephews and caring friends. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Mel and Cathy Birnbaum.
Scott fought a valiant battle with cancer. Notwithstanding the pain and emotional toll his illness brought him, he never lost his optimism and wonderful sense of humor. Scott was respected by everyone who met him, as there were no strangers, just new friends. He was extremely generous and did everything in his power to make life better for others.
Scott founded his textile recycling company in 1994, nine years after graduating college, and grew his business in an industry that betters the world. Although a humble man, his tremendous success was a testament to his hard work and resilience. Scott loved and appreciated his employees and thought of them as family.
Scott loved taking his dogs for long walks and enjoyed running at White Rock Lake. Scott was a serious music aficionado and loved sharing his music with Suzie and Jeff. He and Suzie attended rock and roll concerts all over the world. However, his favorite musical moments were spent at home with his family while they listened as his son Jeff played the guitar. Scott was Jeff’s biggest fan and Jeff was the joy of his life.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Scott’s life at Temple Emanu-El on Wednesday, October 19, at 4:00 p.m. followed by a reception at Temple Emanu-El.
If desired, contributions to honor Scott’s memory may be made to M.D. Anderson’s Cancer Moon Shots Program or the charity of your choice.
