Sharon Gay Weinberg passed away quietly at home on September 27, 2011 from complications of multiple sclerosis. Her strength in coping with a long, progressively debilitating illness was an inspiration to those dear to her. Her beautiful eyes closed, her lovely smile stilled; she is now at peace. Sharon was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 20, 1939, the daughter of Manny and Betty Asquith. She graduated from Cleveland Heights High School and Case Western Reserve University with a degree in elementary school education, and won an award for the best student teacher in her senior year of college. She married Arthur Weinberg, also from Cleveland, in 1959 and supported the family by teaching elementary school math until he completed medical school and internship. The births of Michael and Stephen interrupted her teaching career and the family spent three years in Akron, Ohio before moving to Dallas in 1970. Once her children began attending school, she resumed her career by serving as a substitute teacher in elementary math at Greenhill School, a role that she reluctantly relinquished as her illness progressed. Sharon was a quiet, private person. She found her greatest joy in needlepoint, cooking, reading and doing the things that good mothers do. She was proud of her grandchildren and followed closely their progress at school. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Arthur G. Weinberg, sons Michael and Stephen, Michael’s wife Julie, grandchildren Alex, Ben and Joseph and sister, Phyllis Gary, of Beechwood, Ohio. Donations can be made to the Priscilla R. Stern Fund at Temple Emanu-El, Greenhill School, or to any charity of choice.
