Beloved husband of Nancy Selby Engle. Loving father of Kimberley Engle Forbes and Scott Engle. Father-in-law of Richard Forbes, Jr. Adored grandfather of Lisebeth and M. Ryan Forbes and Sean, Zackery and Charlee Jo Engle. Brother of Blair Engle.
Born on November 12, 1939 in White Plains, NY to Charlotte and Frank Engle, Stan received his B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Bridgeport. He worked for the G.E. Credit Corp. in White Plains before relocating with his family to the Philadelphia area. Stan joined Penn Distributors in Roxborough, PA in March, 1964. He later became president and an owner of Penn Distributors, until his retirement in 1998. He was also a trustee of the Teamsters Health and Welfare Fund.
Golf was a passion of Stan’s and he was active in numerous golf organizations. He was a past member of St. David’s Golf Club, Philadelphia Country Club, Jupiter Hills Golf Club, Tequesta, FL, Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas, TX and Grandfather Golf and Country Club, Linville, NC.
Among his many pursuits, Stan lent his considerable talents and enthusiasm to the Philadelphia Country Club, where from the time of his admission he began a legacy of service that spanned three decades. Accepting an invitation to join the Board of Governors in 1994 he went on to serve as the Club’s 1st Vice President and House Chairman, and ultimately President from 2000 to 2003. His legacy of accomplishments and “firsts” include major events and improvements which remain a fabric of the Club even today. The annual Independence Day Celebration, which now hosts over 1600 people for fun and fireworks began under Stan as House Chairman. As President, he helped complete the modern clubhouse by leading phase two of the first major rebuilding initiative since the 1950’s. His passion for golf was reflected in Club projects as well including a major golf course renovation that included the area’s first installation of bent grass fairways and greens, accomplished along with the complete rebuilding of tees and bunkers. Stan is also credited as “having a major role in PCC being chosen to host the 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship and cohost of the 2005 U.S. Men’s Amateur.”
As a consequence of his twin loves of both golf and the Philadelphia Country Club, Stan developed a close personal friendship with 1939 U.S. Open Champion Byron Nelson who had first returned to PCC in 1990 to celebrate his feat. The membership enthusiastically supported Stan’s proposal of Mr. Nelson as an honorary member where the 19th hole was dedicated and renamed the “Byron Nelson Room” under Stan’s leadership. After completing his time of active Board Service at Philadelphia Country Club Stan went on to serve as President of Jupiter Hills Golf Club in Florida in 2007.
Stan’s service to the sport of golf went beyond his home clubs. As a member of the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) Executive Committee from 1996 to 2004, Stan is credited with growing GAP Team Matches popularity to the point where the organization realigned its divisions and groups in 1997 to accommodate the intense interest. He also served as a GAP representative on the J. Wood Platt Scholarship board from 1997 to 2004 and was part of the founding class of lifetime donors. In his final two years on the Executive Committee he served as Membership Committee Chair during which time the Association welcomed fourteen new clubs.
A celebration of Stan’s life will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Jupiter First Church, 1475 Indian Creek Parkway, Jupiter, FL at 11 AM.
