

Stephen Meadows Seay, youngest son of Charles and Sadie Seay, and longtime faculty member at St. Mark’s School of Texas, passed away on April 4th, 2012. Steve was born on April 21st 1950, and grew up in Dallas. As a child he played in his neighborhood and roamed the woods of east Texas with his older brothers and sister, and a group of friends who became family to him for his whole life. He attended St. Mark’s School of Texas, graduating in 1968, and went on to Stanford University earning his degree there in 1972. He returned to Dallas and began his teaching career at St. Mark’s in 1973. In 1984 he went on to earn an M.A.T. from the University of Texas at Dallas. Steve’s role as a leading faculty member in the Science Department, including a seven year term as Department Chairman, was profoundly important to the school. In addition to his role as Department Chairman, he taught Earth Science, Geology, Astronomy, Life Science, Physics, and Scientific Photography. He served as Director of the St. Mark’s Planetarium and Observatory, and was an active leader in the school’s Outdoor program. Explorer, map-maker, photographer, teacher, and friend, he was a master of star charts and stories. Many of his former students remember his tales of space travel and hope that they will be the next to visit another galaxy! Steve continued to teach after leaving St. Mark’s, and was famous for taking students on great adventures from the Circle A ranch in Texas to the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado and far away Alaska. He was a passionate naturalist and devoted outdoorsman.Preceded in death by mother and father Charles and Sarah, and brother Charles Eugene Seay, Jr.; he is survived by his sister Sally Seay Stout, brother Robert L. Seay, nephews and niece: Charles Robert Stout, Wilson Seay Stout, Sarah Lee Stout, Michael Charles Seay and many loved cousins, family, and close friends. Instead of flowers, friends may give to organizations such as Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, Friends of the Katy Trail, or to the school or charity of their choice. A service in celebration of Steve’s life will be held at the Chapel at St. Mark’s School of Texas, 10600 Preston Road, on Wednesday, April 11th at 5:00 pm.
