Dr. Wendell Alton Jones, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on September 1, 2025 at the age of 94. Wendell was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 14, 1930, to Ruby Mae Estes and James Alton Jones. He grew up in Dallas and attended Highland Park High School and Southern Methodist University, graduating with a degree in Biology. Wendell met the love of his life, Fredna Sheppard, early in life. Though they first crossed paths at First Baptist Church, Dallas and Bradfield Elementary, their first official date was at a “Get Acquainted Dance” at Highland Park High School. They were married on August 12, 1952, and recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. They spent the first two years of their marriage at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, where Wendell served as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean War. They referred to that memorable time as their two-year honeymoon.
After the service, Wendell attended Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, earning his M.D. in 1957. He was in private practice for 35 years. His commitment to medicine extended beyond the clinic, as he enjoyed medical mission trips to Guatemala and other parts of the world. He also served many years on the Board of Directors of the Dallas Center for the Developmentally Disabled. Above all else, Wendell Jones was a man of deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. He served as an elder at Northwest Bible Church, taught “Walk Through the Bible” classes, and remained devoted to Scripture throughout his life. He and Fredna became good friends with many of the missionaries they supported. He loved his church, his Sunday night small group, and studying God’s word through Bible Study Fellowship.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Fredna Jones; children Janelle Stone (husband Bill), Luellen Smith (husband Steve), and Alton Jones, Jr. (wife Jimmye Sue); grandchildren Elissa Henderson (husband Josh), Wes Stone, Wen Stone (wife Sara), Llewellyn Barker (husband Andy), Trevor Smith (wife Kellen), Cole Smith (wife Emy), Alton Neal Jones (wife Kelsey), Kristin Jones (husband Nathan), and Jamie Garst (husband Ben); and great-grandchildren Jack and Jett Henderson, Audrey, Evie, Wallace, and Bonnie Barker, Oliver Stone, Sutton, Everett, Coley, and Sheppard Smith, Palmer and Miller Smith, Jett and Cooper Ann Jones, James Garst, and another great-granddaughter coming soon. Wendell will be remembered as a man of wisdom, humility, grace, compassion, humor, and unwavering faith. His legacy will continue to bless and inspire all who knew him.
