

Florence Alice (Sawyer) Naves, died August 29, 2015, with her family by her side after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Florence was the wife of Gerald J. Naves, Jr., who survives her. She was born in Key West, Florida on August 18, 1927, the daughter of the late Leland and Mary Sawyer. She graduated from the Convent of Mary Immaculate in Key West and started work in banking at The First National Bank of Key West. She met her future husband when he served with the Navy in Key West.
Florence and Gerald were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Danbury on June 20, 1953. Florence never completely left Key West, returning there with her husband and children for vacations and visits with Florence’s family, who remained there. In Danbury, Florence continued in banking with Danbury National Bank, later the former Union Trust Company, retiring as an Assistant Branch Manager, and made many lasting friendships among co-workers and customers. She was hostess for Sunday and holiday dinners for four generations of her family.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, Florence is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lee Olivo (Steven) and Elizabeth A. Katzing (William), all of Danbury; her grandsons, Nicholas M. Olivo, Emiliano E. Katzing, and Esteban E. Katzing, all of Danbury; her sisters, Mary Louise Russell of Umatilla, Florida and Joan Adkins of Lake City, Florida; her sister-in-law, Zee Sawyer of Tallahassee, Florida; her brothers-in-law and their wives, Ronald E. Naves (Sue) of Carmel, New York, and Paul F. Naves (Betty) of Danbury; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Ernest Sawyer, and her sister, Lillian Berube.
Calling hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 3rd, at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, with a Graveside service at 11 a.m., Friday, September 4th, at St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
