George was born in Bridgeport, CT, son of the late Hiram and Jenny (Turney) Hanlon. He attended Newtown schools and was a 1953 graduate of Newtown High School. George served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1963.
He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, Hiram #18, in Sandy Hook, for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Newtown United Methodist Church where he attended faithfully. Although some people might remember George as one of the Newtown Owner-Operator bus drivers, he spent much of his career as an over the road truck driver.
He lived most of his life in Sandy Hook but also relished the years he lived in FL and still talked about it often.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, George was predeceased by his daughter, Paula Reyes, his stepson, George Nelson, and his sister, Shirley Rasmussen.
He is survived by many cousins, and Helen’s relatives, including sisters, a brother, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A private interment will be in Fountainhead Memorial Park in Palm Bay, FL.
A Celebration of George’s life will be held at Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road, Sandy Hook, CT on Saturday, May 3, at 4 pm.
Contributions in his memory may be made to Newtown United Methodist Church or Hiram Lodge #18, P.O. Box 526, Sandy Hook, CT. 06482-0526.
