Mary (Phillips) Russo died unexpectedly in her sleep on October 16, while on a weekend getaway with her daughters. Mary was born on September 30th, 1941 to Leonard and Helen Phillips in Redding Pennsylvania. She moved to Danbury as a small child and became a lifelong resident. She married John Russo, the love of her life and together they had five children. Mary was the owner of The Sandy Hook Cafe from 1978-1988. She retired as a bartender from Bebe’s Lounge in Danbury. In her younger years Mary liked nothing better than a good drink, an all-night game of poker, and playing practical jokes. She mellowed with age and enjoyed playing bingo, reading, and coloring. She was the life of any party with a great sense of humor. She gave unselfishly to anyone in need. She and her former husband John always opened their home to anyone needing a meal or a place to stay. She was a member of The American Legion and for many years she cooked every Thursday with her best friend Rose. She donated all the proceeds to buy tables and chairs for the bingo hall. She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Leonard Jr, Michael Phillips, and Rachael Currid. She is survived by her children, Debra (Walter) Wirag, Diane (Brian) Taylor, John, Leonard (Dawn), and Douglas (Kim) Russo. She was also survived by her brothers Charles (Lamora) and William (Josephine) Phillips, her sister Lenore Scott and the sister of her heart Rose Mena. Mary was affectionately known as Noni to her 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren as well with two more great-grandchildren on their way; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and cousins who all considered her to be their favorite. She will be deeply missed by all. Family and friends are encouraged to call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street Danbury, CT 06810 on Friday, October 21, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. for visitation.
