Susan was born in Danbury, CT, daughter of the late Walter and Emmy Schneider and was of first-generation German descent. After graduating Danbury High School in 1982, she went on to attend business school in New Haven.
She began her career working at The Amanda Company for many years. She loved her time working for Hollandia which she thought of more as therapeutic than a job. Susan overcame many trials and tribulations in her life; her journey into sobriety not only transformed her life but also inspired her to become a beacon of hope for others facing similar struggles. Through her dedication and support, she helped countless individuals find their path to recovery and rebuild their lives.
Later, she returned to school to pursue a career that was people focused. She received her Associates Degree from Naugatuck Valley Community College followed by a BA in Psychology from University of Phoenix in 2014. Susan went on to become a certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor where she received her DARC Certificate from Naugatuck Valley in 2016.
At the time of her passing and many years prior, she worked for MCCA, specifically overseeing Sunrise Terrace where she was a Recovery Support Specialist. Susan loved working with her residents and found a great deal of pleasure watching them achieve their goals. She was also a pillar member of the AA Community, especially amongst her home group at St. Greg’s in Danbury.
Outside of her career, Susan had a contagious passion for life. She was a ray of light on a dark day and the smile you didn’t know you needed. Susan found joy in the simple things; gardening, baking, reading, the beach, watching (and recommending) terrible Hallmark movies, and ice cream before bed.
In addition to her parents, Walter and Emmy, Susan was predeceased by her eldest sister, Ursula Linhard and longtime family friends, Horst Kromer and Alwine (Babe) Griesinger.
In addition to her ex-husband, Dayle Knapp, Susan will be forever missed by her sister, Nancy Schneider-Viglotti (Lou) of Stuart, FL. Her memory will live on through her daughters, Erika Bryan (Ben) of Oxford, CT, and Krystal Musante (Andrew) of Bethel, CT. Susan also leaves behind the absolute loves of her life, her four grandchildren; Ivy (2), Jackson (23mo), Walker (9mo), and Cameron (2mo).
Susan thrived in her role as “Grammy” and despite her shortened time with them, she made an everlasting impact on their lives. Susan also leaves behind the wonderful memories of boating, traveling, and card games she had with dear friend Bob Johnstone.
Susan was not one to dwell, and her calming presence and optimistic nature should be a model for us all. Although Susan will be missed dearly by all who knew her, she would want us to focus on the happy memories made with her.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Brookfield, CT at 11:00am on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Susan’s memory may be made to MCCA, specifically to benefit Sunrise Terrace and their residents at https://mccaonline.com/about-us/in-memory-donation/ or checks can be sent directly to Highwire Deer and Animal Farm, 68 Park Rd., Woodbury, CT 06798.
