With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Anne Beverly McFarlane, a remarkable woman whose kindness, humor, and unwavering strength touched countless lives. Anne passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, in Halifax, surrounded by love.
Born on October 25, 1950, in Montreal to Gerald Gillespie and Mary Powers, Anne pursued her passion for helping others by becoming a nurse. After graduating from the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing in 1971, she embarked on an extraordinary 45-year career. She worked in Ottawa and Barrie before settling in Halifax, where she spent 25 years as a dedicated dialysis nurse. Caring for others was not just her profession—it was her calling, and she truly loved her work.
Even after retirement, Anne remained active and engaged. She embraced travel, frequently escaping to sunny destinations, and enjoyed daily walks around the lakes of Dartmouth. She found a new sense of purpose volunteering at the legion, where she served as secretary with dedication and skill. Through her involvement, she formed deep and lasting friendships.
Anne’s adventurous spirit led her to ski vacations and countless trips to Cuba and beyond. But her greatest joy was being "Grammy" to her beloved granddaughters. She was their biggest fan, cheering them on at their sporting events and making precious memories through excursions, hikes, and simple, heartfelt conversations in the kitchen.
Anne was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Gerald; her sister, Patricia; her half-brother, William; and her spouse, Sterling, with whom she shared over 20 wonderful years. She is lovingly remembered by her devoted partner, Dan Guitard, whose immeasurable love and care brought her great comfort; her son, Michael McFarlane; her cherished granddaughters, Chloe, Cassidy, and Charlotte; and Sterling’s daughter, Robin (Slaunewhite) Zwicker (Gary) and their daughter, Rachel. Each of them will carry her love and wisdom in their hearts forever.
Anne’s passing leaves an immeasurable void, but her legacy of laughter, resilience, and kindness will live on. Her sharp wit and infectious laugh brightened every room, and the courage with which she faced life’s challenges was nothing short of inspiring. In her final years, she embraced each day with grace, reminding us all to live "one day at a time."
She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A family graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville Drive, Sackville, NS.
A Celebration of Life will take place Sunday, April 13, 2025 from 12-2pm at Somme Branch Legion, 54 King Street, Dartmouth.
