

ALLEN, Avis Eileen – of Dartmouth, it is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Avis Allen, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The dedication and devotion shown to her by her son was of great comfort to her during this difficult time. She died peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital, on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Mt Pleasant, she was the youngest child of the late Bernie and Lelia (Wamback) Conrad. Survived by her children, Bernie of Dartmouth, Susan (Kevin) Keyes, Calgary; Karen (Ray) Gilmore, Dartmouth; Grandchildren: Kathy, Christina, Ryan, Janelle, Elliott, Alicia and Kirsty; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Conrad and wife Barbara, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Avis was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Elroy Allen, in 1983; sister, Marjorie and an infant sister. She worked as a correction officer for 20 years. She was a lifetime member of the St James UCW. Her many talents included sewing, quilting, knitting, and tatting. Avis made many lasting friends throughout her life. In her later years she learned to play and excelled at the game of bridge. Avis enjoyed travelling and spending time with family at the cottage. Visitation will take place Sunday, Feb 16, 2-4pm at A. L. Mattatall’s Funeral Home, 217 Portland St. The Funeral Service, followed by a reception, will take place Monday, Feb 17, 11 am, at St James United Church, Portland St, Dartmouth. Rev. Fred Snyder officiating. Internment to take place at a later date.
