David was born on September 27th, 1958 to the late Clarence and Frances (Sue) Cunningham. David passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on March 14, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.
David and Linda were married for 16 years and built a beautiful, full life together with their four
children, Carly, Evan, Daniel and Andrew later welcoming Paulina and Raelyn. David was a loving and playful grandfather to Zachary, Eli and Emilia. He was also loved and cherished by his brother and sister-in-law (Glen and Cynthia Cunningham) with whom he shared many campfires and anniversaries. David is also a loving uncle to Joe (Anne) Farrell, David (Lindsey) Farrell, Lori (Jamie) MacNeil, Lisa Heisler (Chad Fortune), Carla (Derek) Finley and Chris (Erika) MacDonald.
David was a graduate from St. FX University with a business degree and later furthered his studies to obtain his CPA where he won an award for “Smartest Man in the Maritimes”. He was a natural teacher and mentored many in his professional career. He cared about each and every client and strived to guide them to achieve the best possible outcomes for their business. He developed long-standing relationships with each one of his clients that he cherished deeply.
As a father, David was a perfect combination of stern when he needed to be and the cool, fun dad. He provided us with comfort and guidance while also providing us with laughs and lots of long-standing memories.
David was a loving husband. He cherished his time with Linda more than anything in the world. You would often find them traveling the world as they would pick up and go find the sun, often in the convertible. They travelled many places, his favourite being White Point Beach Resort in Liverpool. Linda and David put countless miles on a dozen different cars.
Music was always a love in David’s life. He loved going to live music venues. David played bass in many bands over the course of his life including Blue Money Band, Plan B and with Hal Bruce. His favourite music to play was anything with a funky bassline! He also took pride in writing his own music.
As an avid sailor, he enjoyed going to Shearwater Yacht Club, Barrachois Harbour Yacht Club and Pictou Yacht Club. David loved to race the boat as well as just cruising. He also enjoyed going on overnight adventures, including sailing the boat from Shearwater to Tatamagouche. A stern but fair captain David uniquely skippered his boat, handing the tiller and mainsail over to his son Evan while trimming the jib and spinnaker himself. The two man crew won many races and several trophies together. David would always encourage his friends and family to join in on the fun.
We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals who cared for David over the years. We are especially grateful to the palliative care team at the Dartmouth General Hospital for the wonderful level of care they provided in his last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross in David’s name.
A celebration of life will be held for David on Saturday, April 26 from 1-6pm at 51 Sailors Trail Eastern Passage, NS B3G 0A2. A designated time between 2-3 pm will be a time for those who wish to share a memory, tell a story or quietly sit and be a part of that moment.
