

He was born October 3, 1918 and was the son of the late D Carey and Eva Currie of New Glasgow, NS. Don joined the Armed Services January 14, 1941 and served in Canada and abroad until January 1, 1946. In June 1946, he married Elsie Cole and lived in Dartmouth, NS until 1948 when they moved to New Glasgow with the accounting firm of H R Doane and was then transferred back to Dartmouth.
He was employed with the Provincial Auditors Office in 1955 and later at the National Defence Audit group and on to be the Chief Auditor. He was then appointed as the Hospital Tax Commissioner and in 1965, was named the Provincial Tax Commissioner. In September 1976, the NS Lottery Commission was formed and Don was appointed a member of the board and later Deputy Chairman and then Executive Director before retiring on October 31, 1980 as Acting Chairman.
Don also enjoyed a great social life, with a winter place in Florida, golfing at Brightwood, where he was the past President of the golf club as well as past President of the Dartmouth Curling Club.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Elsie, siblings, Doris (Harold) White, Elizabeth (David) Simpson, Virginia and 5 sisters in infancy, brothers James (Gladys Murray), Neil (Kay Henry), Ivan (Marcia MacCormack). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Don was provided wonderful care in the last few years of his life by the staff on 5 East of the Veterans Memorial Hospital, Camp Hill.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Church, 50 Wentworth St Dartmouth, NS on January 15, 2026 at 11:00am followed by refreshments.
