Green, Doris Hilda - 95, Oct. 22, 1919 – Oct. 20, 2014. Born in Worcester, England, she was the only daughter of Percy Victor and Ellen (Graham) Allen. At the outbreak of World War 2 she volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, reaching the rank of Sergeant. As a PT instructor, she introduced the use of music to accompany the exercises, and worked also as Radio Operator and Transcriber at RAF Hednesford, RAF Uxbridge, and RAF Newcastle, Kenton Bar among others. She met her future husband Austin Charles Green in November 1941, and they were together for 70 years. She and Austin came to Canada in 1948, and emigrated in 1952 when Austin transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy at HMCS Shearwater. Over the years she worked at Simpson’s, the Military Police office at Shearwater, the VG Emergency, and was part of the group of women who established proper libraries in the Dartmouth school system, working at Greenvale, Dartmouth High and Admiral Westphal school libraries. She instilled in her family a love of poetry, music, history, travel, gardening and a copy editor’s perspective on the use of English grammar. In addition she was a beautiful dancer but failed to transfer that to 3 out of 4 children! A stoic British stiff upper lip concealed a fabulous sense of humour and a gentle, generous heart. It didn’t require a special event for her to give an always perfect, unique gift to family, friends, or neighbourhood kids. Doris epitomised the expression “Keep Calm and Carry On” and maintained a love of England and the Queen. Predeceased by husband Austin and grandson Nigel, she will be sadly missed by her children Rachel, Jane, Alan (Shirley) and David (Karen), grandchildren Peter, Amber, Lindsay and Erin. Service will be held Saturday October 25 at 9:30 AM in A. L. Mattatall’s Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. Donations maybe made to the ENT Clinic, c/o the QEII Foundation.
