

Rick, a retired partner of Deloitte Canada, passed away on February 28, 2022 at Oceanview Continuing Care Centre surrounded by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn (Tanner), and their three daughters, Pam, Cathy and Beth. Rick was born on April 23, 1940 in Halifax, NS to Fredrick William and Isabel Louise (Silver) Chenhall. He was predeceased by his parents, younger brother Peter, his mother- and father-in-law June and Guy Tanner, and numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law.
In addition to his wife, Carolyn (Tanner), Rick is survived by his daughters Pam (David), Cathy (Patrick) and Beth (Mark) and much-loved grandchildren Jordan and Keira Dyck; Grace, Ruth and Charlie O’Regan; and Maddie, Tanner and Max Greatorex; as well as brother Hugh and brother in law Maxwell Cluett.
Rick honored his mother and father by living a life of service to his family, his clients, and the community through Christ Church Dartmouth, Kiwanis, the Atlantic School of Theology, the Primates World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF), Alderney Landing Board of Directors, Banook Canoe Club, the Dartmouth Historical Association and the Acadia Graduating Class of 1962. Rick was also a President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia and the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada. He held a strong belief that youth should be involved in providing service to the community which he actively supported through Christian education and Kiwanis youth clubs.
As a reflection of his professionalism and community service, Rick was recognized numerous times including receiving his Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) designation, receiving Halifax Regional Municipality Volunteer Awards, several Kiwanis awards locally and nationally, and Certificate of Recognition from the Anglican Church of Canada re PWRDF, and made an Honorary Kiwanian.
Rick was kind and soft-hearted; always a gentleman. He was a person and professional of great integrity, with humility. Rick had strong faith and found comfort and fellowship especially after retirement in bible study, food bank volunteering, social justice issues, and the ROMEO’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out).
Rick was an avid and a naturally gifted sportsman in his youth and adulthood which translated into being an avid television sports fan and spectator of his grandchildren’s many sport pursuits in retirement. Rick enjoyed playing with the Lunenburg Citizens Band, several musical groups at Acadia University, and had a lifelong love of music. Rick loved to laugh and had a great sense of humour.
Visitation will take place Thursday, March 3rd from 6-9 p.m. at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. Funeral service will be held at Rick’s home parish of Christ Church, Dartmouth on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 11 am. Due to Covid restrictions attendance is limited, registration for the service can be done through the church’s website below. The service will be livestreamed from the church’s You Tube channel.
