On Boxing Day 2022 Herb Levine died in his sleep without an audience, without fanfare, without fuss just exactly the way he would have wanted to go.
As he passed from this world to the next, he possibly had a quiet hope that the two dogs he had shared many of his life years with, Daisy and Meg, might be there to meet him when he arrived. He would be quite matter of fact about the whole thing and quite oblivious as to just how much those of us he leaves behind will truly miss him.
He began his life in Truro as the son of George and El Levine and brother to Donna and Robert. He later became the loving uncle to Sean, Shelly, Christopher and Mandy.
Herb had spent sixty years in the investment business imparting a beacon like quality to those who had the pleasure of working with him throughout those years. He started his career as a trader with Pitfield before anchoring the trading desk of Scotia Bond Company Limited a fiefdom he ran with an iron fist. When Scotia Bond became part of Midland Walwyn and then CIBC Wood Gundy, so did Herb.
With his Kenny Rodgers beard and watchful eye, his family grew to include every young man and woman finding their way in the investment business. He hid a heart of gold and sentimental core behind a gruff exterior, always taking a tiny bit of pleasure knowing he could scare the daylights out of a young chargling one minute but offer a helping hand to them in the next.
His network was broad and far reaching. He was what one might refer to as 'old school'.
In later years when advisors became responsible for entering their own orders, he developed his own client relationships. To say he died with his boots on would be exact.
There was very little if anything of the workings of the investment business that he didn't know. He was a resource to his friends/colleagues both past and present.
He was affectionately referred to using many a name...Herb, Herbie, Pann or sometimes just God.
His home and garden was his refuge, a treat he gave himself.
There are words of wisdom that if you pull your foot out of a bucket of water, the void left fills back in, leaving no hole...as if you were never there. Herb would say that applies to him. The rest of us, those he leaves behind, would not be so quick to agree.
Herb lived his life with kindness, with grace, with honesty, with generosity and with humour. He has earned the verse from Matthew 25:23 "Well done thy good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness"
Donations made to Hope for Wildlife or to a local animal shelter in Herb's memory, would be greatly appreciated.
