PUBLICOVER, Jean Shirley (née Crouse) - 90, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away on Sunday March 5, 2023. The daughter of the late Florence (Nauss) Crouse and Cedric Crouse, Jean spent a happy childhood in the picturesque village of Petite Riviere, Lunenburg County, N.S. Upon marrying at 18 years of age, she moved with her new husband to Dartmouth, N.S., where they lived the rest of their lives. Jean was deeply devoted to her family and was a meticulous homemaker. She always had a smile and friendly words for neighbours and friends. She believed in the good side of humanity and was a life-long church member, regularly attending Petite Riviere Wesley United Church in the early years, and later St. James United Church and Grace United Church in Dartmouth. Compassionate by nature, Jean raised four children, including one with intellectual disabilities, and for many years she volunteered for a national association for people with intellectual disabilities, now known as Inclusion Canada. She enjoyed her part-time catering work, and was skilled at many things, such as preserving vegetables and other home-grown foods, baking, knitting, and (best of all) rocking her kids and grandkids in her arms. Jean was predeceased by her husband Willard and her brother Philip Crouse. She is survived by her brother Robert Crouse, her children Beth, Nelson (Susan), Sarah, and Jennifer (Geoff), and her grandchildren Matt, Alistair, and Lydia. A special word of thanks goes to all the caregivers who helped to make her comfortable in her later years, especially at Glasgow Hall, Parkland at the Lakes.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at Grace United Church, Dartmouth, at 2pm on August 26, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Apple Tree Foundation: https://www.krrc.ns.ca/fundraising-apple-tree-foundation/ , or to a charity of choice.
