

Hipgrave, Joyce M. H. – 83, of Dartmouth. It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Joyce. Born in Butterknowle, Yorkshire, England to parents Jack and Frances (Glass) Simpson, she passed away suddenly on August 31, 2010 at home in Dartmouth after a courageous battle with Alzheimer disease. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dennis; sons Mark and Paul (Patricia); sister Dorothy in England. Joyce trained as a Professional Secretary in England during her youth. During WWII she served in the WRENS where she met her husband who was in the R.N. After the war they lived in South Africa for a time until Dennis transferred to the RCN and moved to Digby, Nova Scotia prior to being posted to Halifax. Joyce worked as the Executive Secretary to the General Manager of Moosehead Breweries for 30 years until her retirement. During her career she belonged to the Professional Secretaries Association; served on the Board of Directors at the Dartmouth Sportsplex for many years, was involved with the Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association and assisted in various political elections. Above all Joyce was known to all as a lady who knew the true meaning of friendship and will be greatly missed. Visitation will take place 6-8 PM September 6, with a memorial service will to be held 10 AM Sept 7, all in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, the Rev. Dr. P.A. (Sandy) McDonald officiating. Interment will take place in Mount Hermon Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
