How do you sum up almost 90 years of life in a few short paragraphs? Daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, aunt, co-worker, grandmother, great grandmother. She was important to and loved by many.
She was born the 5th of 9 children to Louis and Florence DeYoung, and yes, yet another girl. She went to work at the age of 14 when her father died unexpectedly and was needed to help support her family. She married Cameron Williams in 1955 and they went on to have 3 daughters, staying home to raise them until the youngest was in high school.
She was very proud of her job at The Birches Nursing Home in Musquodoboit Harbour, starting as a housekeeper and retiring 20 years later as head of the Dietary Department. Her incredible work ethic did not go unnoticed.
Left to mourn are are her daughters, Wendy Bowser, Heather MacLellan (George) and Cindy Williams. Her granddaughters Alynn Bowser (Ben), Ashley Bowser (Mark) and Liz MacLellan, her great grandchildren Natalie, Olivia, Macy and Lincoln Brown.
She is also survived by sisters Lorriane Mattatall and Marilyn Levesque (Lucien), brothers Ralph DeYoung (Sharon), Tim DeYoung (Eleanor) and Paul Deyoung (Bev). Sisters-in-law Mineola Williams, Jeannie Williams, Sheila Marks and Gail Williams. Many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Cameron, her son-in-law Loyal Bowser and her sisters Joan Patterson, Geraldine Blakeney and Shirley Manuel.
Sincere gratitude goes out to the staff of Harbourview Lodge in Sheet Harbour who took such good care of Mom and treated her with gentleness and respect.
A celebration of her life will be held at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth on Saturday, September 30 at 2pm.
