Al was born on June 11, 1956 in Waterloo, IA, to Dale and Marlene Sands. He graduated from Westview High School in 1976. On May 26, 1979, He was united in marriage to Kathy Raymond in Kankakee, IL. Al managed various Bowling Centers, starting in 1972 at Dandelles Lanes in Kankakee, IL. He and Kathy moved to the Quad Cities in 1979 where he retired in 2019.
Al loved bowling it was his passion to bowl well and on the management side, he strived to make all his customers happy. He had enormous accomplishments as a bowler, 22- 300 games and 24 - 800 series with 856 being his high series. He also had city titles in Davenport, Moline, East Moline, Rock Island, and Milan. Al is a member of the Davenport Hall of Fame, Rock Island Hall of Fame, and Rock Island Life Achievement Award. Fun fact, he bowled in the Tri City Classic League for 11 seasons and bowled 1,111 games.
Al loved to play golf with his buddies. When he golfed with Kathy, he had a lot of patience and accepted her taking so many mulligans and only making it 9 holes, He had a never ending love of rescuing dogs. Left behind is Yogi, Tucker, Rosie, and Gracie.
Those left in his honor are his beloved wife of 43 years, Kathy Sands; daughters, Angie (Andrew) Reid and Emilie (Phillip) Koenigsacker; granddaughters, Shelby (Dakota) Fersch, Jenna Reid, and Penelope Koenigsacker; brothers, Curtis Sands, Joe (Dianne) Sands, and Mark (Connie) Sands; along with several nieces, nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Marlene Sands, and his three brothers,
Larry, Terry and Cliff.
We are forever grateful for the love and support that we have received from our family, friends, the bowling community which he loved so much, and to Backyard Bowl for their exceptional kindness.
