

Graveside services with military honors for Carl M. Walker, 86, of Davenport and Geneseo, IL, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Davenport Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Interment will follow in the cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Mr. Walker passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo, IL. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.Carl Munroe Walker was born in Michigan on December 4, 1925. After graduating from high school, he went directly into the United States Navy where he served as a Radar man 3rd Class aboard the USS Marathon. During his stint with the Navy, he survived being shipwrecked on a coral reef and also a kamikaze attacked which killed 43 of his buddies aboard ship. Following his military obligations, he married Ione J. Kvernsoen on September 15, 1949 in Chicago, IL. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2006. In October of 2011, he was proud and honored by being able to participate in an honor flight to Washington, D.C. Mr. Walker was retired from the United States Postal Service where he had worked as a mail clerk for many years. He loved astronomy and most especially enjoyed building model airplanes, trains, and boats. He had a big heart and loved nothing more than to tease the staff and residents at Good Samaritan Care facility in Geneseo where he had been a resident.Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter and her husband: Jana and Mark Cantrill; 2 grandsons, Chad Grunewald and Cory Grunewald; and 2 great-grandsons: Quentin and Blake.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ione, and a grandson Shane Gruenwald.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Geneseo Humane Society.
