

Donald F. “Grizz” Whitmore, 90 of Davenport, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at Generations Nursing Home, Rock Island, IL. Per family request, there will be no funeral services. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, February 13, 2017 at the Runge Mortuary. A private family burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Quad City Animal Welfare Center or Generations Nursing Home, Rock Island. Online tributes and condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com.
Don was born in Waterville, Ohio on February 2, 1927, the son of Emmons and Grace (Burkett) Whitmore. He graduated from Waterville High School. Don marred Doris Wisnofske in Waterville where they lived before moving to Haskins.
Don served in the Army during WWII, where he was stationed in Japan. He was employed at the Rossford Army Depot in Toledo, Ohio for sixteen years before being transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal. Later he worked for the Corp of Engineers of the Rock Island district as Chief of Warehousing until his retirement.
Don was a member of NARFE and the Izaak Walton League where he served as Honorable Past President. He loved hunting and fishing and was very happy to have gone on a few trips to Michigan and Missouri. Don liked Blue Grass festivals and enjoyed traveling and camping with his family. He loved playing cards, especially euchre.
Those left to honor Don’s memory are his wife, Doris; children, Diana (John) Zogg, Denise Whitmore, Denette (Jeff) Mills and Don (Jody Steines) Whitmore; grandchildren, Jeff (Melanie) Zogg, Austin Mills, Preston Mills, Jay Whitmore and Joel Whitmore; great granddaughters, Autumn and Anya Zogg, and Uncle Gene Zogg.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Generation, Rock Island, for caring for “Grizz” during his time there.
