

Doris Helen Hickey, 98, of Davenport, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at ManorCare, 815 East Locust, Davenport where she had resided since 2002.Visitation will be Tuesday, July 15, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with services following at 10:30 a.m. at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, 1200 E. 39th St., Davenport. The Very Reverend Richard A. Adam, Pastor, Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish will officiate. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.Doris was born January 4, 1916 in Davenport, daughter of Dennis J. Hickey, Jr. (John). and Selma Stolley Hickey. Doris graduated from the Villa de Chantal, Rock Island and attended St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. Doris received her BA degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and her MSW degree in from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1956.Early in her career Doris worked in Davenport at the Hickey Brothers Cigar Company founded in 1901 by her uncle, William A. Hickey (Bill) and her father, John Hickey. During WW II Doris help with the war effort with service in the American Red Cross Auxiliary at the Rock Island Arsenal.Doris was a Registered Certified Social Worker who served in several schools, mental health centers, and adoptive and foster care centers in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Doris retired from the Bethany Home, Moline, Illinois in 1972. Doris was a kind and thoughtful person dedicated to helping others. Doris was active in the National Association of Social Workers, Quint City Poets and the Older Women's League.In 1998 Doris published a book of her poetry, "Silver Mist Rising, Poems and Reflections". Some of the poems had previously appearedin Lyrical Iowa, Iowa Poetry Day Brochures, the Quad City Times Poets' Podium and other publications. Doris served as the editor of the CASI Newsletter for a period of time during her retirement.Doris was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister, Sister Mary St. Dennis, CHM (Sarabelle Anne Hickey), brother Dennis J. Hickey III (Jack), and nephew David E. Hickey.Memorials may be made to favorite charity.Survivors include nephew Captain Dennis J. Hickey IV, USN (Ret.), Springfield, Virginia, grandnieces Catherine A. Hickey, Arlington, Virginia and Elizabeth T. Hickey, Alexandria, Virginia, and grandnephews Stephen M.
